The Society, in association with Career Ready, The Social Mobility Foundation, The Girls Network, BPP, The University of Law, Manchester Metropolitan University, Manchester University, Salford University, Trafford College, The Black Solicitors Network North, Manchester Trainee Solicitors Group, Manchester Young Solicitors Group , Manchester and Salford City Councils and MIDAS are launching an Access to the Profession Initiative which aims to enable young people from diverse backgrounds to access careers in the legal sector.

As we all know the legal services market is changing and our Access to the Profession initiative will be a model for promoting pathways into the legal profession, engaging firms of all sizes, charities, schools, colleges and academic institutions.  The Society will act as a hub to bring together the key players enabling access to our members who will assist with work experience, mentoring and employment opportunities in all areas, including solicitors, HR, Marketing and IT.  This approach will hopefully inspire young people to choose careers in the legal profession, and equip them with the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to apply for opportunities post sixth form.  It will help to diversify the workforce and give young people an opportunity for social mobility.

Manchester Law Society will act as the hub with Career Ready, the Social Mobility Foundation and The Girls Network acting as the provider of the programmes for the young people.  Each has its own well established progamme working with a school or further education college, a young person(s) and an employer

The City Councils of Manchester and Salford are willing to give their approval to the project and Manchester University, Manchester Metropolitan University, Salford University, The University of Law, BPP, The Black Solicitors Network North, Manchester Trainee Solicitors Group and Manchester Young Solicitors Group and MIDAS have all given the project their approval and support.

The legal profession is already at the forefront of driving activity to become more accessible and we hope that our initiative will encourage aspiration and broaden the outlook of pupils who may not otherwise consider a career in law or the legal profession.

A diverse profession can meet the needs of its clients more effectively and as your local law society, one of our aims is to support and encourage access to the profession and attract the best people to the legal profession, developing and empowering people from all backgrounds and at all levels to use their initiative and make things happen!

We hope that you will join us on Tuesday, 3rd December, 2019, at 5.30 pm at the offices of Irwin Mitchell, 1 St Peter’s Square, Manchester, M2 3AF for the launch of this initiative.  Please come along and listen to the key players in this joint venture who will set out their roles and explain to you how you and your firm can become involved.
