This Years Special General Meeting – The Law Society

  • 16/01/2014

Dear Member,

Following this year’s consultations and the recent SGM, we recognise that some members have felt that their views have not been sought and heeded to the extent that they should have been. With this in mind, the office holders and Legal Aid team are keen to come and meet with as many members around the country to listen to views, discuss the concessions secured from the Government to date and agree the focus for our campaigns in the coming weeks as the Government prepares to announces its conclusions.

The context for this is clear.  Our Council issued a statement immediately following the SGM affirming our intention to increase engagement with members and restate our opposition to the Government’s plans.  We are doing just that and, in the coming weeks, we have planned to:

  • continue our campaign to win concessions on informal consortia, a vital concession in support of small, rural and BME firms.
  • increase our activity to pursue concessions on flat fees in police stations and common fees irrespective of plea; the latter of which we regard as an affront to the rule of law.
  • publicly reassert our opposition to cuts.

We want your input to help us get this right and to ensure your voice is heard.  With that in mind, The Law Society Chief Executive, Des Hudson, will be in Manchester on Thursday 23rd January  at 2pm  and would welcome the opportunity to meet with you to hear your views. The meeting will be at  Manchester Crown Court, Crown Square, Manchester  If you are able to attend, please could you confirm by emailing [email protected]  so that we can ensure that there is sufficient capacity at the venue.

Please note this meeting is for Law Society solicitor members only.

We look forward to meeting you.
